Stories and ideas about gods demanding suffering or choosing hard lives before birth have left me worried that people might be powerless against forces beyond them. How can I think this through without getting more frightened?

Try separating the claim from the feeling it creates. A story can be vivid and unsettling without showing that it is true. Ask what can actually be checked, whether there are other explanations, and whether reading more of the same kind of story is helping or just keeping the fear going.

Religious traditions don't all describe divine power the same way. Some stories include demanding or frightening gods, while other beliefs emphasize compassion, limits on divine power, or symbolic meanings. You don't have to force yourself into one answer. It may help to talk with someone thoughtful and grounded in a tradition you trust, without treating fear itself as proof.

For the immediate worry, step back from the material that is feeding it and do something ordinary that brings you back to the present, like talking with someone you trust or getting outside. If this fear is sticking around, disrupting sleep, or making daily life feel unsafe, a mental health professional can help you work through it without judging your beliefs.
