How can I approach conversations with my friends who support MAGA?

I find myself struggling with how to connect with my friends who are MAGA supporters. Despite our friendship, they hold onto some strong beliefs that I just can't get on board with. I've seen conversations spiraling into debates over claims like 'he wasn't on the island' or 'you ultra liberal.' I still value their friendship, but I'm left wondering what it might take to help them see things from a different perspective. Any advice on how to engage with them without causing friction?

If your friends identify as MAGA but you see it differently, you might want to express how you feel without using charged language. Show them that your critiques are about the system rather than personal beliefs. Also, consider bringing up that both sides can have their issues - it shows you're not there to just bash them, but rather to promote mutual understanding.”,

It’s important to understand that if your friends are deeply involved in MAGA, they likely see everything through that lens. For them, it might be easier to dismiss you as an 'ultra liberal' rather than engage with opposing ideas. Just give them time! They might come around if you keep your cool and avoid heated arguments.”

Cognitive dissonance can make having these conversations really tough. People often attach their egos and identities to their beliefs, which makes it hard for them to listen to differing viewpoints. I’d suggest being patient and understanding rather than arguing. Over time, showing them that you can be thoughtful and intellectual, without fitting the negative stereotype their media portrays, might help. Just keep in mind that not everyone is going to wake up from their perspective, and that's okay.”

sincere_hope: That makes sense. It’s frustrating to see them so stuck, but I guess staying calm and patient is key.

I feel like most people go through phases of belief, and sometimes it just takes a life event or a moment of clarity for them to see things differently. For me, it was a specific incident that made me question everything I thought I knew. Maybe share some alternative viewpoints gently and see if they start to connect the dots. And if you’re comfortable, a little prayer for them can’t hurt either!”

light_in_the_dark: Totally agree! Sometimes the right moment or approach can spark a change.
