I keep seeing similar questions that ask for information but show little research. Could that be data gathering, or are there more ordinary explanations? How should people respond?
What should I make of the same low-effort questions showing up again and again?

Repetition by itself doesn’t tell you much. New people arrive, search can be clumsy, and some users repost topics that get attention. It might be data gathering, but without concrete evidence, that’s only one possibility.
I’d respond to the question in front of you: share only information you’re comfortable making public, and skip anything that feels too personal or oddly specific.

Look at the pattern, not just the topic. A post that asks for sensitive details, pushes people to reveal identifying information, or keeps steering toward the same narrow data is worth treating cautiously. Save a record of what you can see and report a specific concern to moderators, rather than making claims about who is behind it.

Honestly, low-effort posting can just be low effort. If the question is vague, ask what they’ve already checked or point them toward general resources. If it still seems off, don’t engage. There’s no need to solve the motive before protecting your own privacy.

That distinction helps. Repeated questions alone are weak evidence, but requests for personal details are a clearer reason to pause.
