I’m trying to make my herb and ritual practice safer for cats. How do you handle things like loose herbs, scented products, candles, and water left on an altar?

I’d start with access, not substitutions. Keep herbs, oils, and ritual water in closed containers or behind a closed door, and don’t leave anything out where a curious cat can lick or chew it. A covered bowl can still get knocked over, so putting it somewhere the cat cannot reach is safer.

Be cautious about relying on a general “safe herbs” list. Risk can depend on the exact plant and how a cat encounters it, so check the specific item with a veterinarian or an animal poison advice service before using it around them. If you can’t confirm it’s safe, leaving it out of the space is a solid option.

That applies to essential oils and scented products too. I’d avoid diffusing or applying them around cats unless a vet has confirmed the particular product and setup are appropriate.

For open flames and smoke, I’d keep the cat out of the room while they’re in use, then air the space out before letting them back in. If that’s awkward, an unlit candle or a non-scented symbolic stand-in can keep the ritual without adding flame or fragrance.

And don’t leave a candle burning unattended, even in a room the cat can’t enter. A closed door helps with access, but it doesn’t remove the fire risk.
