As I’m falling asleep, I sometimes see detailed images or geometric patterns with my eyes closed, even though I haven’t taken anything. Is that a common sleep-related thing?
Is it normal to see vivid shapes with my eyes closed while sober?
Answers
That can happen in the stretch between being awake and falling asleep. People may see patterns, colors, or surprisingly detailed scenes during this transition. It doesn’t by itself mean anything unusual is happening, and vividness alone can’t tell you where the images come from.

If it only happens with your eyes closed as you’re getting sleepy, and you feel otherwise well, it’s generally less concerning than visual changes that continue when you’re fully awake. If it’s new and persistent, starts happening with your eyes open, or comes with vision loss, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or other worrying symptoms, get medical advice promptly.

There can be a couple of things mixed together: ordinary imagery while drifting off, plus patterns your visual system produces when there isn’t much external input. If you want to get a clearer sense of the pattern, note when it happens, how long it lasts, and whether it changes with sleep, medication, or illness. Don’t press on your eyes to try to make it happen.
