Question

What Should I Do After Using White Sage as a Non-Native?

I'm a beginner in witchcraft and recently burned white sage to cleanse myself of negative energy, not realizing its cultural significance. Now that I'm aware, I want to know what consequences I might face and how to properly dispose of any sage I have left. Any advice?

If you're thinking about disposal, you might consider using it for a different purpose, like in a garden for pest control, rather than tossing it. But if you've had enough, you can bury it as a way to return it to the earth. Just make sure you’re mindful of how you handle it moving forward!

If you're done with it, feel free to use it instead of letting it go to waste. Burning it with intention can still have a cleansing effect, just be more aware of its cultural significance next time.

It's totally okay that you didn't know! A lot of white sage isn't ethically sourced, and it's important to be aware of that. I personally buy mine from indigenous sellers who can guide you on how to use it respectfully. If you're looking for alternatives, green sage and other fragrant herbs work great too!

No worries, nothing bad is going to happen to you. Different indigenous groups have varying views on non-natives using sage. Some think it's fine, while others have reservations. Just go with what feels right for your practice!
