Should I Make My Own Runes or Buy Them?

I'm new to rune magic and I'm trying to decide whether I should make my own runes or buy a set. I'm particularly interested in the Elder Futhark and have recently purchased books about it. My main focus is using them for spells, but I'd also like to incorporate them into divination alongside Seiðr. I'd love to hear about your experiences with either option and any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Make your own for sure! It adds a personal touch. However, if you buy a set, you can always paint or decorate over them to make them your own.

I definitely recommend making your own runes. You can quickly create a set using painted stones or even carved wood. Just find a branch, cut it into 24 slices (coins), and then carve or burn the runes onto them. It’s a great way to connect with them!
creative_soul: I love that idea! I'm thinking of carving and painting mine too.

Creating your own runes is definitely the way to go! You can find inspiration from DIY sets others have made, and you can always check out high-quality wooden sets on Etsy if you want a combination of handcrafted and professional quality. But really, carving and painting them yourself is the special part.

In my studies, especially in *Liber Tiamat*, I found that it’s actually the Elder Uthark where Uruz comes first and Fehu last. If you’re looking for something magical, I suggest buying well-carved stone runes, maybe with gold inlays. It'll definitely add a special touch.
inktarnation: It seems everyone agrees about making my own! Just not sure I have the time to do that.

From my experience, any magical tool that I craft myself seems to work better. There’s definitely a personal connection that you can’t get from something store-bought. I started making my own runes and it taught me a lot about the practice. I've received sets as gifts, but I often prefer those because they look amazing and I don’t stress about any little imperfections.
curious_cat_87: Thanks for sharing your thoughts! That's a helpful perspective, and I might try making my own first.

I actually made my runes years ago with river stones my child brought me from a park. We picked out the right amount, and while I started with a Sharpie, it didn’t last long. I ended up painting each rune and sealing them, which worked beautifully. They've held up well after a few touch-ups!
painted.dream: That sounds wonderful! What did you use to seal the paint on your runes?
