Which Is Better for Scrying: Black or Clear Crystal Balls and Mirrors?

I've noticed that different rituals often use either clear crystal balls or dark mirrors. For instance, in Poke Runyon's Book of Solomon's Magic, he employs a crystal ball for the Almadel ritual but a dark mirror for the Goetia ritual. I'm curious if these two types are interchangeable or if one is more suited for specific practices. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Material matters a lot when it comes to scrying! Generally, dark tools like black glass mirrors, obsidian balls, or even bowls of water are preferred because the darkness helps your mind create vivid images. But honestly, it boils down to your personal preference and what resonates with you. You can use just about any scrying material if it feels right for you.

Honestly, it depends on what works for you. I started with a black mirror, which was just a painted piece of glass, and then found a smokey quartz ball that I really connected with. While I might not always see clear images, I get a sense of detail from the space I’m staring into. My ex had a different way of seeing things through the objects, so it really varies from person to person.

If you want to try something different, you can actually use a candle! The idea is to do a Tratak meditation where you stare at the flame without blinking. Eventually, when you close your eyes, the flame should appear in your mind's eye. It's a cool technique to explore!

Earl grey tea in a cauldron is my go-to for setting the mood!

I actually crafted my own scrying mirror using some double-pane picture frames. I painted one side of the glass black and kept the clear pane in front—really easy and inexpensive! Also, fun fact: the best scrying tool I’ve ever had was an old 70's TV with a curved screen. I left it on static for years, and it made for an awesome ambient light source when scrying.
