I use candles for rituals and sometimes add oils or herbs. What are the main safety rules, especially for dressed candles?
How do you keep ritual candles safe?

Same rules as any candle: use a stable, heat-resistant holder on a clear, level surface, well away from curtains, paper, shelves, and anything else that can catch fire. Stay in the room and keep the candle in sight. If you need to leave, put it out.
Don’t burn it all the way down to the holder, and follow the candle maker’s instructions for wick length and use. Sand or a stone underneath isn’t a substitute for a proper holder or supervision.

I’d skip putting herbs, resin, or oily mixtures directly on a candle that wasn’t designed for them. They can catch fire or make the flame behave unpredictably. If the candle starts smoking heavily or the flame grows, extinguish it if you can do so safely, then let everything cool before checking it.

For a simple setup, keep the candle away from pets, kids, and drafts, and don’t move it while it’s lit. Keep a suitable way to extinguish it nearby. If you want the ritual without an open flame, an electric candle or another flameless option works too.

That makes sense. I’ll keep any herbs or oils separate from the flame rather than dressing the candle itself.
