How Can I Start Learning About Vodun and My West African Roots?

Hello everyone! I'm a Black American with a Sierra Leonean heritage. Growing up in a religiously diverse environment with both Christian and Muslim influences has really shaped my spiritual journey. I've stepped away from traditional organized religion and found a deep connection with spirituality, especially through practices like Hoodoo, which I engage in regularly—such as maintaining an altar and connecting with my ancestors. Now, I'm eager to explore the Vodun traditions linked to my West African roots, specifically from my mom's side. However, since my immediate family leans towards Islam, I don't have much guidance there. I'm unsure of where to begin this exploration or which resources might be helpful. If anyone has suggestions, particularly anyone connected to the Temne tribe or who has knowledge about Vodun, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

To really dive into Vodun, it’s best to consult with a practicing priest or authority on the subject, as this religion is generally passed down through direct teachings rather than books. Seeking out local community centers or cultural organizations may help you connect with someone knowledgeable in Vodun practices. Building that relationship could provide you with valuable insights and guidance.

curiousPathfinder: Got it! But if I'm looking for some background info or history on Vodun, are there any books or sources you might recommend?
