Question

Do Tarot Decks Have Specific Purposes or Do We Assign Them?

I'm curious if people give their tarot decks specific roles, or if the decks naturally align with certain types of readings. I'm planning to get a new deck for Christmas (yes, I totally have too many already! 😂), and I've always wondered if it's good practice to dedicate one deck to daily readings while another is used for specific kinds of work. In my deck interviews, I ask each deck about its strengths and weaknesses, but I can't help but think whether they have their own 'preferences'—or if it's up to the reader to decide how to use them. What do you think?

I don’t believe decks have a mind of their own, so I don’t ask mine what they want to do. To me, they’re just tools. I keep a journal to track what each deck does best, why I chose it, and how I feel about it over time. This helps me avoid buying duplicates and keeps my deck connection alive. Plus, focusing on what I already have prevents that FOMO feeling to buy more.

Sage_Spirit: That's a smart approach! I think keeping track helps build a better relationship with your decks without just accumulating more.

I have one deck that I treat like a best friend. It’s my go-to for everything, and I always show gratitude for its guidance. We’ve built a solid bond, and I feel comfortable with its energies now compared to when I first started.

To me, tarot decks are special tools for readings. I might use a particular deck for softening tough messages or others that bring spiritual insight. I feel some decks naturally resonate with different themes, like how you wouldn’t cut a watermelon with a bread knife. It makes sense to use the right deck for the right vibe, whether for myself or clients.

Visionary_Vibes: Love this analogy! It really emphasizes how each deck can enhance a different reading type.

At the end of the day, you’re in charge! I don’t get why some people act like their tarot decks have feelings. They’re just tools. You decide which deck to use under what circumstances based on what works for you, just like choosing which instrument to play. So, pick the one that feels right for the situation.

Talented_Tarot: Exactly! It’s all about your personal style and preferences, not the deck having a say.

For me, I own multiple decks, mostly to admire their art. I use them more for study and reflection than practical readings. I believe that with the right mindset, I can change how they respond without needing to buy new ones. It’s all about connecting with the images and feelings they evoke.
