Can I safely use Eucalyptus leaves for smudging without starting a fire?

I have a ton of Eucalyptus leaves on hand, and I keep hearing about using them to make smudge sticks. However, since I live in Western Australia, I've always been cautious about fire safety because Eucalyptus is known to be highly flammable. I want to know if the key to using them safely is just ensuring the leaves are completely dry, but I've found almost no information on fire safety for this kind of practice. I know Eucalyptus has cleansing properties and smells amazing, but I really don't want to risk a fire hazard.

Honestly, just keep fire safety in mind, and you'll be fine! Remember to follow some basic rules: don’t leave your smudging unattended, have water or a spray bottle nearby, and avoid it on high fire risk days.

If you're pulling the leaves dry ahead of time, that should help. When you burn them, they don't actually need to be on fire for long. It should just smoke for the most part—light it, let it catch briefly, then blow it out.

Eucalyptus definitely has a lot of oils that can make it burn quickly. It's a good idea to start small; try burning just one leaf in a safe area first to get a feel for how it goes.

I personally burn a couple of eucalyptus leaves in an open bowl, or I toss them in a pot of water on the stove to simmer. My family has used them for air purification for ages, and it gives a great smell!

I just tried burning a single leaf outside. It went up pretty fast! I let about an inch catch fire, then I waved it out. It produced plenty of smoke, but the smell was reminiscent of bushfires. I wouldn’t want to make a whole stick from something so flammable.

Have you thought about using a simmer pot? It’s safer, and you’ll still get that great smell without the risk of burning!

You can always use those leaves to make tea too! It's a healthy option and can be quite calming!

cautiousCathy: Totally agree! The oil in those leaves is extremely flammable. Doing a small test burn first, away from anything flammable, is really smart.
