Some online communities seem to want fresh questions, then respond harshly when people ask basic things or share an opinion. What might be behind that, and what helps keep the conversation welcoming?

Sometimes regulars are tired of answering questions they think have come up before. That can explain the impatience, but it does not make insults useful. A short pointer to an earlier discussion gets the information across without making someone feel foolish for asking.

There can be a status thing going on. If people treat knowledge as proof that they belong, a newcomer’s question can become an excuse to show who knows more. Then the group says it wants new ideas while making it risky to offer one. That contradiction is worth calling out.

Moderation and group norms matter. A community can be direct without turning every basic question into a test of whether someone deserves to participate. Clear guidance on where to ask, plus stepping in when replies become personal, can help keep discussion open.
