A few years ago, while living in a basement unit, I experienced several unsettling things and saw a gray, muscular figure with a jackal-like head near the yard. Later, I noticed a similar shape in a dark corner indoors. Is there a useful way to make sense of what I saw?
What could explain an Anubis-like figure I saw?

Anubis is a recognizable comparison, but a resemblance by itself can’t identify what the figure was. In dim light, the brain can turn partial shapes and shadows into a clear-looking person or animal, especially when you’re already frightened. If it happens again, note the lighting, how long you saw it, how far away it was, and whether you were tired or just waking up.

The jackal-headed description naturally brings Anubis to mind, but that doesn’t mean the sighting can be assigned to that deity or to any specific supernatural being. Similar-looking figures show up in different stories and images. I’d treat “Anubis-like” as a description of the appearance, rather than a firm identification.

I’d separate the figure from the other events instead of assuming they all had one cause. Check ordinary things that can affect a basement, like drafts, door latches, shadows, and where objects are balanced. If anyone in the home is having unusual symptoms or feeling unwell, check the carbon monoxide detector and ventilation too. That won’t explain every reported event, but it’s a sensible safety check.
