I had frightening experiences as a child that I understood as apparitions, and lately I’ve sometimes heard my name called in different places. I’m wondering if I’m provoking something, and what would be a sensible way to respond.
Am I doing something to bring this on?

I wouldn’t assume you’re causing this or that it means something is targeting you. Hearing a familiar name can have ordinary explanations, and the experience can still feel vivid and unsettling. If it keeps happening, affects your sleep or daily life, or gets more intense, tell someone you trust and consider discussing it with a healthcare professional. That’s a way to check what might be going on, not a judgment about you.
If a voice ever tells you to hurt yourself or someone else, or you feel unsafe, get help from a trusted person or local urgent care promptly.

Before trying to interpret it, keep a simple note of when it happens: where you are, how tired or stressed you feel, and whether there’s background noise or someone nearby. You could also ask a person with you what they noticed, without trying to steer them toward a particular explanation. A pattern may help you decide what practical next step makes sense.

If a spiritual explanation is part of how you make sense of this, you can hold that belief without treating the experiences as proof that something is after you. I’d skip activities that leave you frightened or make the fear feel bigger. Stick with people and routines that help you feel grounded, and talk it through with someone calm who won’t pressure you into a scary explanation.
