While a house was empty, a room TV seemed to switch on and off in camera alerts. Another clip showed a bright speck moving near the camera as the recorded noise grew louder. There was also a musty smell after returning. What would you check before deciding what happened?
Could there be an ordinary explanation for this?

I’d start with the TV and its connections. Some TVs can wake or change state because of a timer, a remote-control app, a connected device using HDMI-CEC, or a setting that restores power after an interruption. Check the TV’s settings and any connected devices, then compare the camera timestamps with the TV’s own activity or power logs if available. A brief power blip is only one possibility, not the only one.

The bright speck doesn’t tell you much on its own. Dust or an insect close to a camera can look like a glowing object, and a camera may raise its audio sensitivity when the room is quiet. I’d save the original clips, check whether the camera clock is accurate, and review the full footage around each alert rather than relying on the motion-triggered snippets.

Don’t let the strange footage distract from the musty smell. Check for damp spots, leaks, standing water, or a change in the smell after airing the room out. If it persists or there are visible signs of moisture, get the source checked. That part is easier to investigate directly than the camera clips.

That makes sense. I’ll treat the smell as a separate practical issue and check the TV settings and footage before reading too much into the clips.
