Beauty ideals change over time, but lately I keep noticing very thin bodies getting a lot of attention among female celebrities. Is this a new trend, or are there other reasons it might seem so widespread? I don’t want to guess at anyone’s health or assume what any one person is doing.
Why does it seem like so many female celebrities are getting much thinner?

It could be a trend without being a coordinated one. Fashion, styling, and entertainment often recycle a narrow look once it starts getting attention. People in the same industries see the same images and incentives, so the look can spread even if nobody is deliberately setting out to make everyone look alike.

I’d be careful about treating the images we see as a clear picture of what celebrities look like day to day. Red carpets, selected photos, camera angles, clothes, and online feeds all affect which bodies get shown and noticed. That could make a shift feel more universal than it is.

The status-symbol explanation is possible, but it’s hard to establish from appearances alone. A look can signal fashion awareness or access to certain styling without every person sharing the same motive. And people can be thin for many different reasons, so I wouldn’t read a celebrity’s health or intentions from a photo.

One distinction that gets lost is that the entertainment industry’s preferred look isn’t necessarily the same thing as what most people find attractive. A very narrow ideal can dominate casting or fashion imagery because those industries reward a particular silhouette, even while people outside them have varied tastes.

That makes sense. I may be seeing a heavily selected slice of people and images rather than a reliable overall trend.
