I made a new account, followed only a few people, and still got a lot of political posts from unfamiliar accounts in my feed. Is there a way to cut those recommendations down?
Why am I seeing so much political stuff from accounts I don’t follow?

Try using the feed that shows posts from accounts you chose to follow, if that option is available. For unwanted recommendations, use the feed’s controls to say you’re not interested, and mute accounts or words that keep showing up. It may take repeated feedback before the feed changes much.

Seeing a post doesn’t necessarily mean the system has decided you hold a particular view. Recommendation systems can use lots of signals, including what gets attention, and political content can travel widely. If you want less of it, avoid opening or responding to those posts and use the available preference controls.

I’d check the recommendation and content-preference settings before assuming the feed is targeting you for persuasion. You can also review the accounts you follow and remove any you don’t want shaping your feed. If the controls don’t help, using a feed limited to followed accounts is the simplest workaround.
