I’m trying to separate the established facts from the unanswered questions in this case. What do we know about Alisha, and what remains unknown?

Alisha Heinrich was identified in 2020, nearly 38 years after her body was found in the Escatawpa River in Mississippi. Before that, she was known as “Delta Dawn” or “Baby Jane Doe.” She was 18 months old.

Accounts place her disappearance with her mother, Gwendolyn Clemons, in Missouri in late November 1982. The child’s death was ruled a homicide, but no one has been convicted.

Some of the most upsetting details come from reported witness sightings near the highway and bridge shortly before Alisha was found. The timing is described as December 3 or 4, while her body was recovered on December 5. Those accounts are part of the reported timeline, but they do not by themselves establish exactly what happened or who was responsible.

The case information describes Alisha as having been alive when she entered the river. It’s worth keeping that distinction in mind: the manner of death is reported, but the identity of the person who killed her has not been established in court.

The DNA identification answered who the child was, not who killed her or what became of her mother. Gwendolyn Clemons is still missing, and the available account does not confirm whether she is alive or dead.

Her mother’s boyfriend at the time was later treated as a person of interest, but he has since died and was never convicted. So the identification was a major step, while the central questions about responsibility and Gwendolyn’s fate remain unresolved.
