What Really Happened to Barbara Bolick During Her Hike?

Hey everyone! I'd love to dive deep into the mysterious disappearance of Barbara Bolick and discuss the various theories around it. On July 18, 2007, 55-year-old Barbara went for a hike in Montana's Bitterroot Valley with Jim Ramaker, who is the boyfriend of her cousin. After enjoying the beautiful view at Bear Creek Overlook and sharing a snack, Jim took a moment to look around while Barbara was only about 20 feet away. When he turned back after just a minute, she was gone—without a sound or any indication of what could have happened to her.
Search teams combed the area but found no trace of her—not her body, her gear, or even the Magnum revolver she carried for safety. Barbara had left her ID and money at home, which raises questions about the theory that she left voluntarily. While Jim was thoroughly questioned by police, he was not charged with any wrongdoing. He mentioned encountering two unidentified men driving a pickup truck on their way to the hike, but these individuals were never identified.
Several theories exist about Barbara's disappearance:
1. Jim may have harmed her. Though they seemed amicable, any sort of argument could have led to her accidental death.
2. It's suggested that Jim might have fabricated the hike entirely and that Barbara never made it to the trail.
3. Barbara may have chosen to walk off on her own, potentially after an argument.
4. Her husband's involvement was also investigated, but no concrete evidence pointed towards trouble in their marriage.
5. Perhaps Jim really was just mistaken about how long he turned away, and she could have walked off or had an accident.
6. There's an interesting theory that she could have left the trail unexpectedly for a moment and fallen prey to natural hazards or other unforeseen events.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts and theories on what could have really happened!

I think we often jump to conclusions about hiking companions doing something wrong, but honestly, people can act irrationally in bizarre situations. Sometimes things just happen without a clear reason, and nature can play tricks on our minds too. Maybe it was an unfortunate accident where she accidentally wandered away and fell.

If we're assuming the hike was a setup, there are two possible scenarios: either Jim killed Barbara before they even reached the trail or they made up the hike to cover up what he did. If they did hike, he could have harmed her somewhere along the trail and hidden her body. It's all very sketchy!

I can't shake the feeling that something fishy is going on. If it was just the two of them alone, what was really happening beneath the surface? There are too many inconsistencies in Jim's story and the whole hiking situation.

Having gone hiking myself, I know how easy it is to lose your way in unfamiliar territories. An experienced hiker like Barbara could have easily taken a wrong turn while distracted. It's crazy how quickly they can get lost.

I recently listened to a podcast episode on this case. They highlighted the importance of finding those two hikers Jim mentioned. If they can verify he and Barbara were there, it could either support the theory that she fell or raise suspicion about what really happened. It’s a crucial detail that might help solve the mystery!
CuriousCat87: Right? But those guys were never even identified despite extensive searching. Seems strange.

While I find it shocking that Jim could simply let Barbara disappear, I do agree that a stranger abduction feels less likely in a case where someone was so close. It really raises a lot of questions about trust and motivations.

cynicalOutlook: And if Jim is telling the truth, he could have just been distracted longer than he claims. Maybe she wandered off and met with an accident? It’s possible.
mysteriousMind: Wow, you've got a good point. It’s hard to believe that the whole story about her just disappearing into thin air is true.
