Accounts of Terry Slaugenhoupt’s disappearance differ about why she left her apartment on January 6, 1991. What can be stated cautiously, and which details should stay uncertain?

The clearest outline is pretty limited: Terry returned to her apartment that night, then left at some point and was not seen again. Her brother had spoken with her earlier that day and planned to meet her on January 8. When he went to the apartment, her roommate said Terry had not been seen since the night of the 6th. Her mother was informed on January 10 and reported her missing.

The reason she left is not settled by these accounts. A phone call, a convenience-store errand, and a call made from the apartment all appear in different versions, so I would label those as disputed rather than choose one.

I’d separate the destination from the fact that she left. A nearby convenience store is one possibility, but a short walk to a place does not establish that she went there. The phone explanations conflict too. Unless a stronger record clears that up, the honest timeline ends with her leaving the apartment.

Those details may sound small, but they change the story of her last known movements. A careful summary should keep the alternatives visible instead of turning one retelling into certainty. It can still note that she was reportedly making ordinary plans with family, without treating those plans as proof of what happened later.
