What happened to the AboveTopSecret website and why did it shut down?

I've been wondering what led to the shutdown of the AboveTopSecret website. Was it the U.S. government that took it down? Also, are there any similar websites to AboveTopSecret that still operate today?

From what I know, AboveTopSecret (ATS) was a treasure trove of information for years. After it changed ownership, many important discussions started to disappear, which caused users to lose interest. Eventually, it just faded away and ended up shutting down. It's a bummer because it hosted some fascinating debates, including those from the Flat Earth crowd, which was pretty wild at the time.

I have been trying to find out anything I can about Simon Gray who initially devised Above Top Secret....I would love to know where he ended up & what he is up to now...?
Absolute shame that Above Top Secret seems to have bitten the dust...back in the late 90's early 2000's that site was getting upwards of two MILLION hits a day....I wish I could reboot it....!

lostInThought: What kind of discussions went missing after it was sold? That sounds really interesting!
