I'm curious about the case of Skye Budnick, who went missing on April 7, 2008, after arriving in Noboribetsu, Japan. She took a one-way flight there, checked out of an inn, and was never seen again. Skye was an avid fan of Japanese culture, anime, and gaming, particularly drawn to Final Fantasy. In the game, there's a snowy landscape with ice caves, similar to the Karurusu Ice Cave located near where she stayed. The trailhead to this cave was right next to her last inn, and I'm wondering if she might have hiked to the cave on the day she went missing. What do you all think? Did her interests lead her to explore there, or is there something else at play?

You've made some compelling points! While I personally found the theory that she was lured by someone online less convincing, I do think her choice of Noboribetsu is interesting. It's not a popular spot for Western tourists and her interest in the ice cave fits her character as a gamer. I wonder why she decided to travel in April though since the ice cave tours aren’t available at that time anymore. Maybe she planned to enjoy the cherry blossoms later? It’s complicated.

observantReader: Right? The timing is strange! I think if she wanted to see the cherry blossoms, early April might seem a bit early for that. She must have had a plan in mind, whatever that might be.

I really enjoyed reading your post! I think it's plausible that Skye was experiencing some mental health issues. It's not uncommon for people to go off the grid during such episodes. Higher education environments can trigger these problems, and sometimes individuals might end up in unfamiliar places. It certainly raises concerns about what could have happened to her during that time.

thoughtfulObserver: Absolutely, the possibility of a mental health crisis is significant. It might explain her choice of location and why she didn't inform anyone about her trip.

I don’t know if she actually went to the ice cave. It sounds like you’re connecting dots that might not be there, but hey, the deep caves mentioned could pose dangers. If she hiked too far out of sight and had an accident, no one would've found her for a long time. That cave is pretty extensive, and with no tours operating in the warmer months, it might not have been checked.

skepticalMind: I get your point! However, it seems quite the leap to assume she would try to explore on her own like that, especially without prior experience. It's worth considering, but it does make you think about her intentions!
