Question

Is My Gasoline Being Diluted?

I've always considered myself a skeptic, but lately, I've noticed something strange with my gas usage since the war started. I typically drive to three places: my girlfriend's house, the gym, and the grocery store, so I'm quite familiar with how far I can go on a tank. Normally, if I fill up the gas tank before heading to the gym, I can make two round trips without the fuel gauge budging much. But this time, after just two trips to the gym, my tank is down to about three-quarters. My girlfriend is away, and I haven't driven anywhere else. There are no issues with the car—tire pressure is good, no signs of leaks or engine problems. It just feels like the fuel is somehow diluted or less effective. Has anyone else experienced this?

You're definitely not alone in feeling this way! There are reports of higher-ethanol fuels being used more frequently, which can seem less potent. If you're filling up at a station that mixes in ethanol, it could affect mileage. Some places have started selling E15, which is known to burn fuel faster than traditional gas.

skepticalSally: Yeah, I read that some places are allowing higher ethanol blends even if it’s not great for efficiency. It always seems to be the case that they’re looking to save a buck instead of giving us quality fuel.

It’s definitely a possibility. Different stations have different standards, and some are notoriously better than others. Just keep an eye on which brands you fill up with; I found Shell seems to last longer than others. Have you looked into your usual stations?

concernedCitizen: Good call! I’ll pay attention next time. I just wish there were more consistent options out there.

You might want to check out your engine air filter! If it’s clogged, it can impact your fuel efficiency significantly. Changing it might help improve your mileage.

mechanicMandy: That's a good point! Keeping everything clean can make a noticeable difference in how the engine runs.

I’ve heard that some gas stations are offering 0% ethanol gas, but they are pretty rare. It’s possible some are diluting their more premium options,
