I came across a claim about a public figure and an alleged graphic image. What’s a sensible way to check whether the claim is reliable without trying to find or share the image?
How can I check a disturbing image claim without passing the image around?

Start with the claim, not the picture. Check whether established news organizations or relevant official channels have reported the event, and compare the details across more than one independent source. An image by itself can be old, mislabeled, or unrelated, so finding one would not prove the claim.

I’d leave graphic images alone, especially if they may show someone in a vulnerable state. If there’s no dependable confirmation beyond anonymous claims, treat it as unverified rather than trying to track down a copy.

That makes sense. I can look for reliable reporting without circulating the image.
