In the woods, especially around dusk or after dark, distance and odd angles can make familiar things look unfamiliar. An animal moving between trees, a branch shifting, or light through a window can all create a pretty convincing shape. Without a clear view, it’s hard to say much more.

If it happens again, stay somewhere safe and note the time, weather, lighting, distance, and direction. A photo can help, but include a fixed landmark for scale and avoid getting closer just to get a better look. Those details are more useful than trying to identify it on the spot.
