I have sleepwalking and confused awakenings, and sometimes I see the same frightening girl during episodes. It has happened on and off for years. How should I make sense of it, and what would be sensible to do next?
Could a recurring figure be part of a sleep episode?

Vivid sights and strong fear can happen around confused awakenings, so a familiar figure appearing repeatedly does not by itself show that something paranormal is happening. Since these episodes include sleepwalking and have sometimes become intense, I’d bring the details to a healthcare professional, ideally someone familiar with sleep disorders. A short log of when it happens, how much sleep you’ve had, and what your partner observes could help them assess it.

For now, treat the sleepwalking as a safety issue, whatever the explanation turns out to be. Clear the route around the bed, secure doors and windows in a way that still allows safe exit in an emergency, and ask your partner to note what happens and how long it lasts. A clinician can help decide whether a sleep evaluation is appropriate. Trying to debate the figure during an episode probably won’t be useful while someone is confused.

I wouldn’t dismiss how frightening it feels, but I also wouldn’t take the repeated appearance as proof of a haunting. The connection with sleepwalking and half-awake confusion is a good reason to start with a medical conversation. If you begin seeing things when fully awake, or the episodes are putting you or someone else at immediate risk, seek medical help promptly.
