I'm exploring my path in witchcraft and magic, and I'm trying to figure out if I can practice Hoodoo. I'm African-American, but my family has always lived in Africa, which makes me the only one born in the US. I know Hoodoo is a significant part of Black American culture, but I'm looking for clarity on whether I can engage in this practice.

Absolutely, you can practice Hoodoo! Don't let anyone tell you that you need an initiation ceremony; being African American is your initiation. It’s different from traditions like Voodoo that require initiation from a priest or priestess.

It’s about ancestry, for sure! Some believe Hoodoo is meant only for those descended from the enslaved, while others are more inclusive. Connecting with an experienced practitioner can really help guide you in your journey.

Engaging with your ancestral roots is essential! If your family has rich traditions from Mali, maybe those will feel more authentic for you. But exploring Hoodoo is fine as long as you approach it respectfully.

You really should focus on what resonates with you and your lineage! Perhaps exploring your family’s traditions since they practiced Islam for generations would be more aligned, but if Hoodoo calls to you, do some research and follow your instinct.
