I’m looking for careful, well-sourced books on Dönmeh history and the Armenian Genocide. I’d prefer works that make their evidence clear and don’t gloss over contested interpretations.

For the Dönmeh, Marc David Baer’s The Dönme: Jewish Converts, Muslim Revolutionaries, and Secular Turks is a good scholarly starting point. Cengiz Şişman’s The Burden of Silence: Sabbatai Sevi and the Evolution of the Ottoman-Turkish Dönmes is another useful study, with a different emphasis.

One distinction worth keeping clear: Dönmeh history is not itself a history of genocide, and it shouldn’t be treated as part of the Armenian Genocide without specific evidence linking a claim to the subject.

For the Armenian Genocide, Raymond Kévorkian’s The Armenian Genocide: A Complete History is a detailed, wide-ranging account. Ronald Grigor Suny’s They Can Live in the Desert but Nowhere Else: A History of the Armenian Genocide is a more compact place to begin. Taner Akçam’s A Shameful Act is also worth considering for its focus on the political decisions and documentary record.

These are scholarly works, not neutral in the sense of having no interpretation. Comparing their evidence and notes is more useful than looking for a history with no point of view.

I’d start with one broad history, then follow the footnotes toward whichever question interests you. Check what kinds of sources an author uses, how they handle disagreement, and whether they distinguish documented findings from interpretation. That gives you a better way to judge reliability than a promise of complete objectivity.
