A relative described waking before dawn, seeing what seemed like her sleeping body below her, then hearing distorted sounds while getting ready to pray. The account is secondhand, and I’m not sure what to make of it. Are there ordinary explanations for experiences like this?
Could this have been a sleep-related experience?

The part about seeming to be outside her body fits experiences people sometimes have around the transition between sleep and waking. A vivid dream can feel like the real room, and the mind can briefly misread the body or surroundings. That’s a possible explanation, not a way to know exactly what happened.

Waking suddenly to an alarm, especially in the middle of the night, can leave you in a strange in-between state. Perception and sounds may feel distorted for a short time. If it happens repeatedly, or she has unusual perceptions when fully awake, it would be sensible to talk with a healthcare professional rather than trying to diagnose it from one account.

You don’t have to settle on a supernatural explanation to take her fear seriously. Sleep-related experiences can feel completely real, and the prayer setting may have made the sounds especially unsettling. If it would comfort her, she could also speak with someone she trusts in her faith community, without treating that as proof of what caused it.
