Any ideas what my cousin and I saw in that dark hallway?

When we were children, my cousin and I saw a hunched, long-limbed shape rush across a dim hallway at night. We both remember being frightened, but neither of us can identify it. A relative in the house was ill and sometimes reported frightening things at night, though I don’t know if that matters. What are some plausible explanations?

In a dim hallway, a fast-moving person, pet, hanging clothes, or a shadow can look very different from what it is. With little light, the brain fills in missing details, especially shape and movement. The fact that you both saw something is worth taking seriously, but it doesn’t tell us exactly what the thing was.

My first guess would be an ordinary figure crossing between rooms, with the darkness making its posture and proportions look strange. Since the memory is from childhood, there may not be enough detail left to narrow it down. It could simply stay an unsettling, unexplained moment.

Two people can share a frightening sighting without either one making it up. You may have seen the same unclear shape, then remembered it together over the years. That doesn’t mean the memory is false, just that the exact details, like its color or how it moved, can get harder to pin down.
