Why Do Gnostics View the Old Testament God as a False Deity?

I'm curious about Gnosticism and its perspective on the Old Testament. I've come across the idea that Gnostics regard the God of the Old Testament (YHWH) as a false god, often referred to as the demiurge, while they believe the true God is the one that Jesus talks about in the New Testament. Could someone explain why Gnostics consider the Old Testament God to be a false deity compared to the portrayal of God in the New Testament?

From what I understand, in Gnostic thought, the demiurge, which is associated with the Old Testament God, is seen as a flawed being. This demiurge creates an imperfect world because of its own flaws. In contrast, Jesus speaks of a true God, which is often depicted as pure love. Gnostics believe that connecting with this true God doesn't require strict rules, unlike the demanding nature of the demiurge.

spirit_Seeker: Yeah, that's pretty much it. Gnostic beliefs include the idea that there are powers, like the archons, that control us, and they are often aligned with the flaws present in the Old Testament teachings.

In Gnostic texts, the creator God appears as someone who creates but lacks full awareness, even needing the intervention of higher wisdom to breathe life into humanity. This viewpoint often leads to seeing the demiurge as ignorant or misled, which directly contrasts with the all-knowing God of the New Testament, where Jesus introduces a path back to the true divine through knowledge and enlightenment.

If you dive into the Gospel of Thomas, you'll notice a different portrayal of Jesus compared to the New Testament, which might challenge established views. The teachings suggest a more insightful, compassionate side of Jesus that emphasizes love and equality, in stark contrast to some interpretations of the Old Testament. This difference could be a part of why some Gnostics view the Old Testament God as flawed.

alternative_Thinker: Absolutely! The Church excluded many of these texts, possibly to avoid undermining traditional authority, especially concerning issues like gender equality and personal interpretation of divinity.

Morgue Official on YouTube has some excellent videos that break down Gnostic texts and how they relate to both the Old and New Testaments. They really help clarify why the Gnostics viewed these entities differently.

The description of God in the Old Testament often showcases a being that is angry and flawed. For instance, the Old Testament God is shown to interact with humans in very imperfect ways, which contrasts starkly with the Gnostic view of the true God being concealed and perfect. In Kabbalah, for example, there's a concept of Ein Sof, which is ineffable and doesn’t interfere in our world, showing a significant difference between these depictions of God.

While Gnosticism provides a framework for distinguishing between the two Gods, some argue that it really depends on interpretation. The differences might just reflect the evolving understanding of God through generations. The Bible itself often discusses this change as a father-son dynamic, which could explain why perceptions vary.
