I heard gravel crunching and what sounded like a growling dog rushing toward me outside at night. When I turned around, nothing was there and the sound had stopped. What are some plausible explanations?
What could make a dog sound seem that close and then vanish?

There isn’t enough detail to identify the sound. A real animal could have been nearby but out of sight, or moved off just as you turned. In the dark, it can be hard to judge direction and distance, especially when a sudden noise catches you by surprise.
It could also have been another sound that seemed animal-like in the moment. The experience can feel very vivid without showing that anything paranormal happened.

Gravel and a growl-like noise might have come from separate sources, or from one sound being misread in a startling moment. Sounds around a house can be difficult to locate at night, and quiet afterward doesn’t tell you what caused them.
If it happens again, get somewhere secure first, then check from indoors with a light. Don’t approach an animal you can’t see clearly.

Could have been a dog, coyote, or something else nearby, but the description can’t settle that. If you’re worried about animals around the property, look for tracks in daylight and keep an eye on pets. No need to jump to a supernatural explanation based on one strange sound.
