I’m recovering from burnout and trauma, adjusting to new diagnoses, and starting to feel ready to return to a spiritual practice. What are some gentle ways to add a little ritual to everyday life without making it another obligation?

Keep it tiny and attached to something you already do. Take one slow breath before your first drink of the day, or set an intention while washing your hands. If you miss a day, nothing needs to be caught up. The ritual can simply be a moment you chose for yourself.

I’d make the ritual easy to pause or change. Light, scent, and sound can feel grounding for some people and unpleasant or triggering for others, so follow what feels okay that day. A quiet cup of tea, noticing the weather, or touching a familiar object can count. You don’t have to push through discomfort to make it meaningful.

Maybe try a small closing ritual too, not just one for starting the day. Put away one item, say a simple phrase to mark that you’re done, or turn off a lamp with the thought that the day can wait until tomorrow. It can be practical and ordinary and still feel intentional.
