Is AI taking the place of alien conspiracies?

I’ve seen the idea that fears about AI are replacing older alien-related conspiracy stories. Is that a meaningful pattern, or just a way of interpreting current debates?

Those stories don’t have to replace each other. Conspiracy narratives often reuse familiar themes, like secret control or manufactured danger, and attach them to whatever people are worried about now. That can look like a handoff without showing that anyone planned one.

I’d separate two things: real arguments about how AI should be governed, and the claim that someone is deliberately creating problems to justify sweeping control. The first can be examined through public proposals and evidence. The second needs specific evidence of coordination, not just a resemblance to an older conspiracy story.

Fear can be useful for grabbing attention, so it makes sense that dramatic claims would follow the topic of the moment. But that doesn’t tell us whether AI has actually displaced alien stories, or whether both remain in circulation. A stronger case would need examples over time and a clear way to measure the change.
