How would you make sense of this watch coincidence?

I have three quartz watches set to the same second and an automatic watch I hadn’t worn for weeks. I meant to wind the automatic one, got distracted, then came back to it later. After winding it, I noticed its time seemed to match the quartz watches exactly. Is there a straightforward explanation, or could I have misread what happened?

Winding an automatic watch powers its movement, but it doesn’t set the hands. If it had truly stopped for weeks, winding alone wouldn’t bring it to the current time. So the key question is whether it was actually stopped, and how carefully the seconds were compared.

A quick glance can make two displays look closer than they are, especially if the hands are hard to read. If it really was running and matching to the second after weeks, that would be an unusual coincidence, but the account alone can’t tell us exactly what happened.

I’d start with the ordinary possibilities: perhaps the watch hadn’t stopped, or perhaps it was restarted or adjusted earlier than remembered. There’s also a difference between the hands looking aligned and checking them side by side over several seconds. The detail that would help most is whether the automatic watch’s seconds hand was visibly moving before the winding.

That’s the part I can’t confidently answer. I noticed it needed attention, but didn’t check the hands closely until afterward.

Even if it really matched, a striking coincidence isn’t proof of anything beyond the match itself. The memory of the sequence can also get sharper after a surprising moment, while small uncertainties about when it stopped or what was checked remain.

If you want to test it, note the automatic watch’s displayed time before winding next time, then compare it with the quartz watches using a clear reference. That won’t explain this past moment, but it can show whether the watch is stopping or keeping time as expected.
