Has anyone else had vivid images right as they wake up?

Twice, just after waking with my eyes still closed, I saw what felt like a close-up video message through a fuzzy, screen-like image. I couldn’t make out what was being said. Is there a useful way to think about experiences like this?

One ordinary possibility is hypnopompic imagery, which means vivid images or sensations around the transition from sleep to waking. The timing you describe fits that possibility, though it doesn’t establish exactly what caused it. A screen-like or snowy appearance is a description of the image, not proof that a transmission was happening.

I’d keep the meaning open for now. You can note when it happens, how much sleep you had, whether you were fully awake, and how long the image lasted. That gives you something concrete to look back on without deciding right away whether it was symbolic, dreamlike, or something else.

And I wouldn’t blame yourself for not understanding it. A vivid image doesn’t have to contain a message you were expected to decode.

If it only happens briefly while you’re waking and it isn’t upsetting, writing down the details may be enough. If similar images start happening when you’re fully awake, become frequent, or make you feel unsafe, it would be sensible to discuss them with a health professional. That’s a way to check in, not a judgment about what the experience means.
