Is Eyes Wide Shut really tied to that 1986 ball?

I’ve seen claims that Eyes Wide Shut was based on a Rothschild family ball. Is there solid evidence for that, and are there reliable films or documentaries about the event or similar gatherings?

The specific connection seems to be speculation, not an established account of how the film was made. Eyes Wide Shut is an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s novella Dream Story, so the masked gathering in the film isn’t evidence that it depicts a particular real event.

It’s reasonable to ask what happened at a documented party, but claims about secret activities need evidence of their own. A resemblance in costumes or atmosphere doesn’t establish a link.

That helps. I was treating the claimed inspiration as more certain than it seems to be.

I’d separate two questions: what can be verified about the ball, and what people imagine might happen at private events today. Without credible reporting or records, guesses about current activities are just guesses.

For documentaries, look for work that names its sources and distinguishes confirmed details from rumors. I can’t point to a reliable film specifically proving the movie was based on that ball.

The film can feel like a window into elite secrecy without being a factual guide to it. If you’re curious, start with well-sourced material about the novella and the film’s production, then assess any claims about the ball separately. That keeps atmosphere from getting mistaken for evidence.
