When someone blames “they” for something, what’s a useful way to ask who they mean without turning the conversation into a fight?

Ask for specifics: which people or organization, what action are they accused of, and what evidence connects them to it? That keeps the conversation on a claim someone can actually examine.

That seems like a good way to keep it focused on one claim instead of a vague group.

If the person can’t say who “they” are, the claim is too vague to assess yet. I’d ask them to name one group and one concrete thing they believe it did.

A joke might take the edge off, but it doesn’t answer the question. Better to follow it with a calm prompt like, “Who specifically do you mean?” Then see whether they can narrow it down.
