Do different spiritual systems share an underlying pattern?

I came across the idea that different spiritual paths may have a similar structure beneath their distinct symbols and names. Is that a useful way to compare them, or does it risk reading too much into the similarities?

It can be useful if the proposed structure is made specific. What counts as a shared pattern? A sequence of practices, a view of the self, a way of explaining change? Then compare examples that fit and ones that do not. Otherwise, a broad enough framework can make very different traditions look alike.

Similarities don’t automatically point to one hidden system. People can arrive at similar ideas for different reasons, and traditions can also influence one another. A comparison might be interesting without proving that magic has a single underlying architecture.

I’d treat it as a lens, not a conclusion. Looking for recurring themes can help organize a lot of material, but the differences matter too. If the framework makes every example fit no matter what, it may be saying more about the framework than the traditions.
